Ginger Syrup:
Step 1
To make the ginger juice, purée 8 ounces of whole ginger pieces with skin on.
Step 2
Strain the puréed ginger through a fine mesh strainer. To get the most amount of juice, use the back of a spoon to push the puree through the strainer. Keep leftover ginger pulp in the fridge to be used in any cooking!
Step 3
Put sugar and ginger juice in an air tight container. Shake it vigorously until blended every 10 to 15 minutes for one to two hours. Feel free to do it more often and longer if necessary because this is how the syrup is bonded. (Note: this syrup is not heated or boiled.)
Step 4
Store in refrigerator and shake before usage.
Turmeric Sugar Rim:
Step 1
In a shallow small bowl, mix the sugar and turmeric. Add less/more sugar or turmeric based on tastes. Set aside for later.
Cocktail:
Step 1
Cut a lime wedge and run it around the lip of the glass.
Step 2
Dip the lip of the glass into the turmeric sugar and move around until it’s coated on thick.
Step 3
Measure each ingredient (except sparkling water) and put them in the shaker with ice. Shake till shaker feels icy. Strain the cocktail into two rocks glass.
Step 4
Add some ice to each glass.Top off with sparkling water (For stronger drinks, put less sparkling water and vice versa).
Step 5
Garnish with lime wheel and/or candied ginger.

Ginger Syrup:

12 ounces cane sugar

12 ounces ginger juice (or 8 ounces of ginger pieces)

Turmeric Sugar Rim:

4 ounces (8 tablespoons) sugar

1/2 to 1 ounces (1 to 2 tablespoons) turmeric

Cocktail:

4 ounces (8 tablespoons) vodka

2 ounces (4 tablespoons) ginger syrup

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) lime juice

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

Sparkling water

Lime wheel or candied ginger for garnish

Notes & Variations

  • Fresh squeezed citrus in shaken drinks is preferred.
  • Not sure how to purée ginger? Roughly chop some ginger and put in blender, add some water and blend till smooth.
  • Don’t like turmeric? Try moringa or hibiscus powder as substitutes.
  • Prefer to make a classic mule? Make without the turmeric powder.
  • Prefer to make a non-alcoholic mule? Make without the vodka and substitute with sparkling water.
  • Use left over ginger syrup in other drinks as an alternate sugar option. For example, in the morning make a tea with fresh squeezed lemon, ginger syrup, mint leaves and hot water. Likewise, add ginger syrup to iced water and make a lemonade.
  • We prefer drinking the Golden Mule on the rocks, but if you prefer your drinks served up — go for it!
  • Don’t like vodka? Go ahead and switch it out for whiskey (Golden Irish Mule)!
